Case Study | HP Envy x360’s Intel Optane Hybrid Data Recovery
Successful Data Recovery from an Intel Optane Memory-Configured System
Overview
A client had a data loss situation involving an Intel Optane Memory M10 paired with a 1TB HDD in his HP laptop. This setup allowed for optimized storage performance by caching frequently used data from the 1TB HDD onto the smaller Optane memory module. However, an improper removal of the Optane memory module led to a potential loss of over 150GB of valuable data.

Problem
The laptop initially had the Intel Optane Memory M10 module paired with the 1TB HDD to form a hybrid storage system. The configuration functioned as a RAID array, where the Optane memory cache enhanced the speed of commonly accessed files by storing them closer to the CPU.
The failure happened when the client attempted to upgrade the system by installing a new SSD. During this process, the Optane memory module was removed without backing up data and properly unpairing it from the HDD. The new SSD was installed, Windows was installed on the SSD, and the system was rebooted. While the system detected the new storage configuration, the client’s data became inaccessible due to the broken logical link between the Optane and HDD.
Solution
The first step was to assess the storage configuration and confirm the nature of the failure. As retrieving data directly from the HDD wasn’t possible, efforts were focused on properly reconnecting the Optane memory module to its paired HDD. Luckily, the Optane module had no physical damage issues that would make data recovery impossible. Using specialized data recovery tools, we managed to get images of both the HDD and Optane, correctly re-pair them using metadata and identify the partition structure. The data, totaling over 150GB, was successfully recovered. After successful data recovery, the files were verified for integrity, ensuring no data corruption occurred during the recovery process.
Conclusion
This case highlights the importance of understanding the complexities of Intel Optane Memory configurations. When dealing with such systems, it is critical to follow proper unpairing and reconfiguration procedures to prevent data loss. Furthermore, this case underscores the value of professional data recovery services, particularly when handling complex storage systems, ensuring that even under challenging circumstances, data can be retrieved with minimal risk of permanent loss.
